Fire Weather Watch Issued for Lancaster County Saturday | KLIN

A fire weather watch has been issued for much of eastern Nebraska, including Lancaster County, for Saturday.

Gusty winds up to 35 mph and low relative humidity below 20 percent will favor rapid to potentially explosive fire growth, according to National Weather Service Meteorologist Clint Aegerter.

“It’s just looking like a hot, dry, windy day, especially for early October. This month is a time where we are concerned about fire weather, but certainly tomorrow with highs in the probably middle 90s in Lincoln and southwest winds gusting around 30 to 35 times, maybe even higher and relative humidity getting in the 20s or maybe even into the teens, any fire that does start will probably spread pretty rapidly,” Aegerter told KLIN News.

This watch will primarily be in effect Saturday morning through Saturday evening.

Aegerter reminds residents to be very careful with any equipment that can make a spark. Farmers out working are encouraged to have fire extinguishers on hand. Do not park any vehicles in long, dry grasses, as that can cause a spark. If camping is apart of your weekend plans, Aegerter says it would be smart to avoid campfires if possible, or to be very careful otherwise. Make sure to observe any local burn bans.

Outdoor burning is not recommended.

Lastly, Aegerter encourages any Husker fans attending Saturday’s game against Rutgers to wear/bring sunscreen.
