BVB – Celtic: TV recordings hide what no viewer should see

Finally the Champions League again in the Ruhr area! The premier class returns to the Westfalenstadion on the second matchday of the 2024/25 season. Borussia Dortmund versus Celtic Glasgow was on Tuesday evening (October 1st). An encounter that fans had been looking forward to for weeks (read more about it here).

Shortly before kick-off, the BVB fans wanted to send a message. When the teams arrived at Dortmund-Celtic, they showed a mega choreo. However, this may not have been well received by UEFA in particular.

BVB – Celtic: Fans renew criticism

The new game mode has been in effect in the Champions League since this season. Instead of several groups, there is only one big league. The consequence: more participants, more games and more income. UEFA pushed through the reform against all fan criticism.

The fans of Borussia Dortmund protested at the front. Hardly a home game in the premier class has passed without the south stand displaying banners with sometimes wild insults. As is well known, none of this helped. And so they followed up in the game between BVB and Celtic.

“UEFA MAFIA” – Director didn’t want to show it

When both teams arrived, the BVB supporters once again unrolled a choreo that was directed against the European association. “UEFA MAFIA” was written in large letters on the largest standing-room stand in Europe. At the bottom of the south stand there was also a huge banner with the inscription: “You don’t care about the sport – all you care about is money” – in German: You don’t care about the sport. All you care about is money.

While the capital letters were still being unrolled, the direction clearly made sure that as little of the choreo as possible could be seen. Usually, the impressive images of large choreos are particularly popular on TV broadcasts. But on Tuesday evening, immediately before kick-off, you could literally feel how the management was trying everything to avoid showing the harsh criticism of UEFA.

Dortmund – Celtic: Wild start

Shortly afterwards, despite everything, the game began on the pitch and thus part 2 of the new Champions League era. And a wild game developed. After seven minutes, Emre Can gave BVB the lead with a penalty. Seconds later he made a mistake at the back and made it 1-1. Shortly afterwards, Karim Adeyemi put the black and yellow team in the lead again.
