Borussia Dortmund achieved a new sales record in the 2023/24 financial year. The management had already announced this when the balance sheet was presented in August. The season was “extremely successful economically” due, among other things, to high transfer income, for example from the sale of Jude Bellingham to Real Madrid, and the move into the final of the Champions League.

BVB breaks the magical barrier

Due to the unexpectedly high income from the European Cup, KGaA’s turnover rose above the half-billion-euro threshold for the first time in the club’s history, even after adjusting for transfers. The gross group total performance even reached the mark of around 639 million euros, 100 million euros above plan. “It is particularly pleasing that the increase in sales was generated in all revenue areas,” says the annual report published on Friday. In addition to game operations, this also includes TV marketing, sponsorship, merchandising as well as conference and catering.

The consolidated result improved by 34.7 million euros or a whopping 361 percent to 44.3 million euros in the 2023/24 financial year. At its meeting on September 26, the Supervisory Board followed management’s recommendation to pay a dividend of six cents per share for the first time since 2019. That makes a total of 6.662 million euros for the shareholders. The general meeting on November 25th still has to approve this.

BVB personnel expenses increase significantly

Personnel expenses rose sharply, by 32 million euros to 268 million euros. Of this, 16 million euros went to amateur and youth football and 44 million euros to trade and administration. This left around 208 million euros for the licensed player sector – an increase of 23 million euros. Although the basic salary fell by three million euros to 126 million euros, additional bonuses amounting to 33 million euros were paid.

BVB paid around 4.4 million euros in taxes and the equity ratio is 55.5 percent. For the financial year, Borussia Dortmund is calculating total gross group performance of 545 million euros and an annual result of between five and 15 million euros.

Management salaries have also increased. After almost six million euros in the previous year, the management team received 8.28 million euros. As in the previous year, the CEO, Hans-Joachim Watzke, received a fixed salary of 2.4 million euros. His co-managing directors Carsten Cramer and Thomas Treß were paid a fixed amount of 1.122 million euros (previous year: 1.068 million euros). Sports managing director Lars Ricken, in office since May 1st, starts at 200,000 euros (for May and June). The success-related remuneration makes up a big chunk: Due to the sporting and economic success, this item rose to 3.285 million euros.
