The mayor of Tivaouane, Demba Diop, more commonly known as Diop Sy, found himself before the Criminal Investigation Division (DIC). According to information relayed by Seneweb, the politician and entrepreneur was summoned as part of an investigation related to the management of funds allocated to the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic in Senegal.
This summons comes in a context where several personalities are targeted for their role in the use of funds from the “Covid-19 Force Fund”. Diop Sy, a member of the National Assembly, is one of the figures accused of having committed irregularities in the management of these resources. In 2022, the “FRAPP/France Dégage” movement and the “FDS” party filed a formal complaint against him. This initiative, led in particular by Guy Marius Sagna and Babacar Diop, aims to denounce alleged financial misdeeds as well as fraudulent practices surrounding the administration of these funds.
The Court of Auditors’ report, published in December 2022, revealed significant anomalies in the management of finances intended to support the response to the pandemic. This document highlights embezzlement, overbilling, as well as violations of public procurement procedures, affecting several sectors and ministries. Industrial development is among the areas singled out for withdrawals of money without proper justification, resulting in significant losses for the State.
Besides Diop Sy, his daughter and businessman Rayan Hachem were also reportedly summoned to respond to these allegations.
