Over time, Coumba Gawlo and Aziz Dabala’s family had ended up forming a real family. As a testament to this closeness, one of Aziz’s older brothers, known under the pseudonym Modou Bâ Gawlo, is an active member of his Fan Club “Gawlo Gawlo”. This nickname illustrates the boundless admiration he has for the singer, Senegal’s distinguished representative in Africa and around the world.
Coumba Gawlo says she is all the more upset because this heinous crime occurred while she was outside Senegal. Aziz Dabala was an artist with immense talent, known for his availability, his love of a job well done, his kindness, and his elegance, both in his gestures and in his words. His violent death deeply affected those around him and aroused strong emotion in the judicial, cultural, media circles, as well as among the population as a whole. This tragedy marked the minds to a level rarely reached in the recent history of our country.
However, Coumba Gawlo deplores that the memory of Aziz Dabala is now the subject of malicious rumors, aimed at tarnishing the image of the one who, during his lifetime, never stopped giving, whether to his loved ones or to society as a whole. She calls for an immediate end to these practices that are contrary to religious principles, beliefs and common sense.
The diva also categorically rejected any call for popular justice. According to her, no matter how difficult the situation may be, no one should take the place of justice. The exceptional work accomplished by our defense and security forces since the tragedy clearly demonstrates that it is useless to resort to such actions. Certainly, hearts are broken, but we must never lose sight of the fact that the law must prevail, she insists.
During her speech, which lasted about fifteen minutes, Coumba Gawlo also mentioned Mamadou Gano, Aziz Dabala’s companion in misfortune. She prayed wholeheartedly for the eternal rest of their souls and urged her compatriots to do the same. Finally, she called for serenity and calm, values which, according to her, must guide everyone’s thoughts in memory of the two deceased.
