Bayern Munich icon Thomas Müller has played his 710th competitive game for the German record champions. The 34-year-old surpassed legendary goalkeeper Sepp Maier in Sunday’s Bundesliga match against SC Freiburg and became the sole record holder for Bayern.

It is the next milestone in Müller’s impressive career at his favorite club.

475 appearances in the Bundesliga alone

Müller was substituted for Michael Olise in the 59th minute to the loud cheers of 75,000 fans. It was the 2014 world champion’s 475th appearance for Munich in the Bundesliga.

Müller had already overtaken Maier on the previous matchday in the 3-2 win in Wolfsburg. Maier played 473 times for Bayern in the league during his career from 1962 to 1979.

“Records like that aren’t that important to me, but rather that I scored a brutally beautiful goal today, technically outstanding, and then it went in. That’s what I enjoy,” Müller told DAZN.

“14 seasons absolutely fit and healthy” – Kimmich on Müller: “It’s sheer madness”

Beforehand, he had been called to the fence by fans in the south stand, where the 34-year-old thanked them via megaphone and gave them his shoes as a gift. Coach Vincent Kompany was there for Müller’s Bundesliga debut as a HSV player.

“710 games further, that’s unbelievable. 710 games of giving 100 percent, but not only in the games, but also in training,” said the 38-year-old Kompany.

That’s what makes Thomas so special.

Joshua Kimmich calculated that at Bayern, “if things go well, you’ll get to 50 games.” To reach Müller’s number, you have to “stay absolutely fit and healthy for 14 seasons.” This “alone is sheer madness,” said Kimmich. On top of that, “you also have to get the games. That’s crazy. Not many reach that high number of games – and that for one club. That’s quite a number.”
