Refugee Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo González says he will return to his country on January 10 to take office as president. He announced this from Spain, where he recently applied for asylum. González said his stay in Spain is only temporary.

The Venezuelan fled to Spain in September after an arrest warrant was issued for him. Before this, González was secretly accommodated in the Dutch embassy in Caracas for more than a month.

The opposition leader is accused of sedition, conspiracy, forging documents and usurping powers. The arrest warrant came a few weeks after González’s claim that he himself was not the winner of the presidential elections.

After those elections on July 28, the electoral council declared incumbent President Nicolás Maduro the winner. He would have received 52 percent of the votes. But the opposition states, based on its own counts, that their candidate González won the elections by a wide margin.

The inauguration of the winner of the presidential election is scheduled for January 10. González says he will return to Venezuela to take over the presidency. He did not say how he expects to still win the presidency.
