About the equestrian event at the Paralympics

In Olympics, there are three equestrian disciplines, but only one in the Paralympics – the para dressage. The official website of the Olympics describes this as the only “artistic” sport in the Para games. The website also has an explainer video which says, “The art is in the ability to communicate the movements to the horse by subtle movements and slight weight shifts. The horse and human work closely together.”

It also said, “Athletes perform a prescribed series of movements in “Para Grand Prix Tests” for the individual and team medal events. In freestyle events, athletes can choose both the routine and the music.”

There are five classes in para-equestrian, known as Grades, with the numbers indicating a different impact of impairment on the athlete’s ability to ride. The competition within the same class includes athletes of all genders and those with different types impairments.
