Brazil calls for postponement of European law on imported deforestation

Brazil is asking the European Union to postpone the entry into force of its new regulation against deforestation. This law would prohibit the marketing in the European Union of certain products such as coffee, soy or beef if they come from deforested land after 2020.

The Brazilian authorities formally stated their request in a letter delivered to the European Commission during a bilateral meeting in Brasilia.

The Brazil sees in European law ” a unilateral and punitive instrument ” and considers that it is contrary to the ” principle of sovereignty ” Another argument put forward: it would be discriminatory, because it would affect ” only countries that have forest resources ».

The network ofONG Climate Observatory judges this letter ” pitiful and astonishing ” Surprising, because President Lula has committed to stopping illegal deforestation by 2030. Moreover, since his return to power, the trend has been downward in Amazonia.
