Inter-religious violence in the north of the country leaves at least five dead

World – Several clashes have taken place in this region between the Hindu Meitei majority and the Kuki community, which is mainly Christian.

Hours after schools were closed, new inter-religious clashes left at least five people dead in India this Saturday. In the north-east of the country, the state of Manipur has been shaken for more than a year by periodic violence between the Hindu Meitei majority and the Kuki community, which is predominantly Christian.

“Since morning, there has been fighting between the two communities in Jiribam. We have recovered five bodies and are awaiting further details,” a local government official, who requested anonymity, told AFP. One person was shot dead while sleeping and four other “armed persons” were killed in a “subsequent exchange of fire,” the Press Trust of India reported.

Attacks are increasing

Saturday’s violence comes after two other people were killed in separate attacks last week. Schools were closed in Manipur state on Saturday by the local government, a day after a rocket attack blamed on rebels killed one person and wounded six others.

A 78-year-old man was killed and six other civilians injured, according to police, who attributed the attack to Kuki insurgents. The incidents took place in Bishnupur district, central India. - 20minutes
