Family allowances provide major support for families with children. According to INSEE figures published in October 2024, nearly 12.9 million households in benefit from social benefits.

A decree of December 27, 2024, published in the Official Journal, also set the resource ceilings to be respected to benefit from the family allowances this year. These allowances are also intended for families with at least two dependent children under the age of 20.

They are paid each month by the Family Allowance Fund (CAF) or the Mutualité Sociale Agricole (MSA). Residents of overseas departments can access it from the first child.

Conditions to benefit from the allowance

The amount of family allowances also depends on the composition of the household. And categorical net income. This income also corresponds to all household income such as wages. But also land income, agricultural profits.

All this, reduced by deductible expenses such as alimony and costs relating to the care of the elderly. Or even certain tax deductions. In 2025, it is the categorical net income of 2024 which determine eligibility for family allowances and their amount.

The income ceilings are also organized into three tranches. They vary depending on the number of dependent children. These installments make it possible to adjust the amounts paid according to household income, underline our colleagues from Actu.fr.

For two dependent children, an annual income less than or equal to 74,966 euros corresponds to bracket 1, with full-rate family allowances of 148.52 euros. Income less than or equal to 99,922 euros corresponds to bracket 2. Where the allowance is reduced to 74.26 euros.

Income not to be exceeded for family allowances

An income above 99,922 euros places the family in bracket 3, with a minimum amount of 37.14 euros. The ceilings increase with each additional child. For three children, an annual income of less than or equal to 81,212 euros corresponds to bracket 1. And this, with an allowance of 338.80 euros.

An income of less than or equal to 106,168 euros falls into bracket 2, with payment of family allowances reduced to 169.40 euros. Income exceeding 106,168 euros belongs to bracket 3. And this, with minimum aid of 84.71 euros.

For households with four children, the resource ceiling for tranche 1 is then set at 87,458 euros. The ceilings for brackets 2 and 3 are respectively 112,414 euros and above. Families with more than four children see their income ceiling increase by 6,246 euros per additional child.

Thus, a family with five dependent children falling in bracket 1 must have an income less than or equal to 93,704 euros. An additional amount also remains provided for each child beyond the third.

In 2025, this supplement amounts to 120.29 euros for tranche 1, 95.15 euros for tranche 2. And 47.58 euros for tranche 3. Children aged 14 or over are also entitled to a increase intended for cover additional needs related to their age.

Recipients of family allowances must therefore take into account all this income for this new year 2025.
