the series that made Netflix

It’s hard to remember what we did with our evenings before falling into binge watching. 10 years ago, Netflix opened the tap to series in France and would forever change the way we watch them. Since its launch in France, the platform has expanded its catalog, but it remains associated with a few flagship series, which have contributed to its popularity.

“House of cards”

It was the series that everyone wanted to see, the one that we wanted to subscribe to when Netflix arrived in France. The political series with Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright, one of the first produced by Netflix, was not available on the platform in France, since Canal + had the rights. Netflix subscribers were only able to discover Frank and Claire Underwood and the mysteries of American political life in 2016.

“Orange is the new black”

As House of Cardsthe series Orange is the New Blackcreated in 2013 by Jenji Kohan, helped attract subscribers to the platform. Over the course of 7 seasons, the series fascinates with the stories of the inmates of Litchfield Prison, and takes an eminently political turn by denouncing their living conditions and the private prison system in the United States, but also by evoking illegal immigration, delinquency, drugs and even transgender identity.

“The Money Heist”

First broadcast on Spanish television on Antena 3, The Money Heist, Money Heist in English arrives on Netflix in December 2017. Very quickly, the story of this crazy robbery in the national currency factory, the costumes, the characters bearing city names, make this series a real global phenomenon. The series created by Alex Pina joins the Netflix fold from the second season. the platform then produces a spin-off on the character of Berlin.

“Stranger Things”

Very inspired by the fantasy films and books of the 1980s, Stranger Things is one of Netflix’s most notable series. Broadcast since July 2016, the Duffler brothers’ series is not only one of the most viewed on the platform, but it has also brought back 1980s fashion, revived Winona Ryder’s career and Kate Bush’s song Running up that Hill.

“The Crown”

With The CrownNetflix had its great historical fresco. The series launched in November 2016 managed to focus the world’s attention on the British royal family, to make Queen Elizabeth II more human (and a little more glamorous too, thanks to Claire Foy). Slaloming skillfully between reality – perfectly recreated – and fiction, when it was necessary to “embroider between the stitches”, according to Peter Morgan its creator, The Crown has been the subject of much criticism. But the British monarchy owes him a great deal of credit for restoring its image.

“Sex Education”

Mixing humor, sex, and teenage malaise, the British series, released on Netflix in early 2019, has revolutionized the way we talk about sex on screen. Liberating, joyful, educational, the subject of Sex Education has freed up young audiences, sometimes allowing dialogue to be opened. So much so that the French family planning department has formed a partnership with the series to raise awareness among young audiences about the importance of sex education.

“The Bridgerton Chronicle”

The series launched by Shonda Rhimes in December 2020 managed to rank its first three seasons in the top 10 most-watched English-language series on Netflix. As whimsical as The Crown is realistic, The Bridgerton Chronicle revisits the British Regency in the early 19th century with bright colors, a diverse cast, and pop music. Like Lupinthe series has had a very beneficial effect on the literary saga from which it is taken.

“Lupin”

The series with Omar Sy, broadcast in January 2021, is not Netflix’s first French production – there have been Marseille in 2016 with Gérard Depardieu – but it was the one that had the biggest international impact. Dusting off the hero, it also boosted sales of books by Maurice Leblanc, the creator of Arsène Lupin. And then Lupin allowed the American public to discover Omar Sy in a real role, far from the franchises he filmed across the Atlantic.

“Squid Games”

It was in September 2021 that this Korean series appeared on Netflix. The series, inspired by Battle Royal or Hunger Gamesconfusing and violent as desired, quickly becomes a phenomenon. To this day, Squid Game is the most viewed series on the platform, with more than 265 million views.

And then it also overflows the frame of the screen, to invade the playgrounds, where children have fun reproducing scenes from it.
