PS: “The party is on the verge of breaking up”… between pro-NFP and anti-LFI, nothing is going well in the Socialist Party

the essential
The national office of the Socialist Party is meeting in a particularly tense atmosphere this Tuesday, August 27. The cause is the friction between Olivier Faure’s supporters and his internal opponents, who are demanding “clarification” and wish to distance themselves from Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s Insoumis.

Frying on the socialist line. In the midst of political uncertainty and while Emmanuel Macron yesterday dismissed the possibility of a New Popular Front (NFP) government, the PS is holding a national office meeting on Tuesday, August 27. The movement’s leadership has in fact accepted the request of its two minority currents, led by the mayor of Rouen Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol and the mayor of Vaulx-en-Velin Hélène Geoffroy, who had called for a “clarification” of the party line.

Olivier Faure’s opponents denounce the PS’s “alignment” with Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s strategy. “We cannot be auxiliaries of La France Insoumise,” said Hélène Geoffroy, who recalled that her movement weighed “51% of the vote of activists on the PS’s direction” at the last congress in Marseille in January 2023.

“We all know in this BN (National Bureau, Editor’s note), LFI’s provocations will never stop, it’s their DNA,” lamented Hélène Geoffroy at the podium, according to an anonymous source consulted by The Midi Dispatch“I have no lessons on the left to receive from LFI. I will not let myself be intimidated by their intellectual terrorism,” she added.

“Resume discussions”

The day after Emmanuel Macron refused to appoint an NFP government, the internal opposition also called for a resumption of discussions with the head of state. “I accept that we must resume discussions with the President of the Republic,” Hélène Geoffroy added. “We will be criticized by all voters, ours and those of the Republican Front, for not having tried until the end.”

And the local elected official continued: “We are asking for a way of working that involves the party’s bodies, a return to the discussion table to find a solution and the abandonment of the dogma of the NFP programme, the refusal of a vote of censure on principle. There may be reforms undertaken from the left and we must try to find them.”

Sébastien Vincini, national secretary of the PS, interviewed on Monday by The Dispatchhe felt that it was time “for Jean-Luc Mélenchon to hand over”. “He is preventing the left from showing that it wants to calm the country. We must show that we will respect the institutions and respect the President of the Republic”, declared the man who is also president of the Haute-Garonne departmental council.
