The four Breton departments are placed on yellow alert Friday January 24, 2025. It will blow hard because of the storm Eowyn. The heart of this depression will hit Ireland where the wind could exceed 200 km/h!
“Brittany is on the fringes of this meteorological bomb,” specifies Sébastien Decaux, forecaster at Météo Bretagne.
Gusts at 120 km/h
The gusts will blow between 100 and 120 km/h on the coasts of Finistère. Winds are not expected to exceed 100 km/h in the rest of the region. We expect 80 km/h in Saint-Malo.
It is a classic gale that is accompanied by continuous rain from morning to evening.
A significant swell
Waves of 15 meters will hit Ireland. The French coasts will be affected by “the remains” of this swell, but to a lesser extent.
-The sea will remain very rough over Brittany with waves of 7 to 8 meters in the Iroise Sea. The swell will weaken when arriving on the coast with waves of 2 to 3 meters in Saint-Malo.
The return of the wind on Sunday
After this windy episode, the weather looks set to be calm for a day on Saturday. The wind will return on Sunday. Indeed, a new depression will form over the Atlantic. It will affect western Brittany from Sunday until Tuesday.
“We fear secondary depression”
The wind will blow very strongly with gusts of 120 km/h. “We fear secondary depression. It is difficult to understand,” announces Sébastien Decaux, who is closely monitoring this second storm which is brewing.
Note that precipitation in January is expected to be well above normal.
