The new Samsung Galaxy S25 focuses on AI, while respecting essential confidentiality

Are we all waiting for more artificial intelligence? Samsung is already convinced of this. The South Korean technology giant has indeed presented the new S25 versions of its flagship smartphones full of elements that should make your life easier thanks to AI.

The Galaxy S25 series includes three models, the S25 Ultra, S25+ and S25. Internally they contain a Qualcomm chip (also in Europe by the way, where previous models had a different power source). This is the Snapdragon 8 Elite mobile platform, a version adapted for the Samsung Galaxy series which should work much more efficiently. This SoC runs Android, with Samsung’s One UI7 on top. For gamers, it’s also good to know that this chip is equipped with a Vulkan engine and improved Ray Tracing, so they can still play more demanding games smoothly.

In terms of storage, as is often the case, different capacities are available: from 256 GB to 1 terabyte, and each of the smartphones in this series offers 12 GB of RAM.

AI Companion

This power appears to be partly intended to drive many new features. Samsung is positioning this device primarily as an AI companion, which contains various ‘AI agents’. The idea behind it is that the device learns your needs and preferences, but without endangering your privacy. According to Samsung, data remains on the edge of your device. They are even carefully stored in the Knox Vault, Samsung’s secure vault, equipped with post-quantum cryptography.

In practice, this AI is no longer Bixby, Samsung’s AI assistant. The latter has been relegated to home appliance systems, while Galaxy gadgets now benefit from a built-in version of Google’s Gemini. Moreover, this system worked rather well during a first practical test. Google has a smooth interaction with Android for obvious reasons, and this combination allows Samsung to introduce several interesting features.

Take for example Google’s Circle to Search, where you draw a circle on your screen around something you want to search for, whether it’s a phone number, QR code, image or something else. You will also be able to give voice commands to various Galaxy and Google apps. You are free to ask the photo gallery to find a specific photo of your cat. Where it becomes particularly interesting is being able to combine these elements. The example Samsung gives is to have the AI assistant automatically search for all your team’s matches online and then insert them into your calendar. The whole thing works not only in English, but also in French, Dutch and German, provided that the apps in question have a version in this language. This is already the case for Galaxy apps and those from Google.

In addition to these features, the Galaxy S25 also contains AI assistants that are now more commonly seen in office environments and are primarily intended to improve productivity. Think, for example, of automatic interview transcription, text summarization and note-taking. The device also includes a Now Brief system, a succinct summary of your day. In the morning, for example, it will provide you with the weather and your appointments and in the evening it will tell you the number of steps you have taken during the day.

Screen and cameras

All three devices are made of robust metal and above all exude an appearance of solidity. The S25 Ultra has a 6.9-inch screen made from Corning Gorilla Armor 2 glass, the latest version of this armored glass. This screen is slightly larger than the similar screen on the S24. The devices remain the same size, but the screen edges are now thinner. The S25 and S25+ have 6.2-inch and 6.7-inch screens respectively, both made from ‘regular’ Corning Gorilla Glass. The entire range is characterized by an IP68 water resistance rating.

Camera-wise, the S25 Ultra has quite a range of them, visible in the series of circles on the back. These include a 50 MP ultra-wide camera, a 200 MP wide-angle model, a 50 MP telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom and a 10 MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. The ProVisual Engine integrated into the device should make it possible, among other things, to group images from different perspectives and, for example, to take sharper or clearer photos. On the front there is a 12 MP selfie camera.

As for the S25 and S25+, the situation is slightly more sober with a 12 MP ultra-wide camera, a 50 MP wide-angle lens and a 10 MP telephoto lens. Here too, we find a 12MP selfie camera on the front.

Battery and price

The battery is a fairly typical model of 5,000 mAh for the Ultra and 4,000 or 4,900 mAh for the S25 and S25+. What’s interesting here is that Samsung is taking some steps towards the circular economy for the base model. Half of the cobalt in this model’s battery comes from recycled Galaxy batteries from previously exchanged devices. Samsung hopes to expand this project later.

Along the same lines, the company also promises that your device will last for a few years. Samsung will indeed support seven generations of operating system upgrades and seven years of security updates for the S25 series.

The Galaxy S25 Ultra can now be ordered at an indicative base price of 1,449 euros. The Galaxy S25 and Galaxy S25+ cost 899 and 1,149 euros respectively.
