Since its founding in 1852 by James Fazy, the Institut national genevois (INGE) has embodied the spirit of openness and knowledge sharing for which Geneva is renowned.

A public law corporation supported by the State, INGE strives to promote science, letters, fine arts, the economy, and societal issues through ambitious programming.

INGE fulfills a mission of dissemination and exchange. Structured into four thematic sections, it meets the expectations of a varied audience.

The Fine Arts, and Letters section collaborates with the University of Geneva as well as other institutions to raise awareness of the Geneva cultural landscape and generate fruitful dialogues with its representatives.

The Economy section addresses major contemporary issues by inviting public decision-makers, entrepreneurs and experts to share their analyses.

The Sciences section popularizes scientific and technological discoveries through conferences led by specialists.

The Moral and Political Sciences section analyzes national and international socio-political issues, offering keys to better understanding the world.

INGE attracts a diverse audience and accessible conferences. With nearly 650 members from all walks of life – political figures, researchers, entrepreneurs and citizens – INGE reflects Geneva’s diversity. Its free conferences open to all are also broadcast online, allowing a wider audience to access them in replay. This democratization of access to knowledge in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere is, without a doubt, one of its strong points.

The positioning of INGE is complementary to the University. It stands out by its vocation to reach a wider audience and to go beyond the academic framework for which it does not assume the research and teaching missions. Complementary, it offers a space for reflection and debate accessible to all generations and all backgrounds. By connecting experts and the general public, it enriches citizen debates and strengthens social and cultural ties.

Its programming is ambitious. That of the first half of 2025 demonstrates the diversity of subjects offered. Among the flagship projects are conferences on the actors of Geneva’s cultural life, precision oncology, debates on energy supply, geopolitics, artificial intelligence and Swiss identity. These initiatives reflect a desire to stay as close as possible to contemporary concerns.

It contributes to the recognition of talent. By awarding artistic and literary prizes each year, in addition to its conferences, INGE actively supports the creativity of Geneva and its region. With two concerts per year (including that of the winners of the Geneva Competition), it offers the public the opportunity to discover young international artists.

INGE builds a bridge between tradition and modernity. It plays a key role in the dissemination of knowledge, thus promoting progress and citizen dialogue. INGE remains a living institution, anchored in its territory while cultivating an openness to the world, which thanks to its activities perpetuates the Geneva spirit: that of a city where knowledge and culture are the pillars of the community.
