Appointed to this role in early November by President Donald Trump, the former Florida senator was unanimously confirmed by the 99 members of the Senate, the upper house of Congress.
Rubio, who will be tasked with implementing President Trump’s foreign policy, opposes the normalization of relations with Cuba and takes a hard line against China.
Son of Cuban immigrants, Rubio will be the first head of American diplomacy of Latin origin.
At 53, he has several years of experience in foreign policy and national security, and has nearly 10 years as a member of the Senate, where he has served since 2015.
