The Senegalese Minister of Tourism, Mountaga Diao, announced on Monday a series of measures to strengthen security in hotels and protect tourists, after an armed attack in a hotel complex on the Petite-Côte.
During the night from Saturday to Sunday, a group of hooded men, armed with machetes and rifles, burst into the Riu Baobab hotel, located in Mbour, a popular destination for its beaches. According to the Senegalese Press Agency (APS), the attackers managed to steal around 12 million CFA francs (18,293 euros) before being put to flight by security forces after exchanges of fire. No injuries or deaths were reported, and the attackers fled.
During a visit to the site, Mountaga Diao strongly condemned the incident. “The authorities will take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of hotels and tourists,” he told APS, adding with confidence: “What is certain is that this will no longer happen. repeat. » However, the minister did not detail the specific measures that will be put in place.
-An investigation was opened by the gendarmerie to identify and apprehend the perpetrators of this attack, a police source told AFP, on condition of anonymity. This incident, rare in the region, comes as Senegal seeks to revitalize its tourism sector, an essential pillar of the national economy.
