Free is preparing its Freebox Super Player: what you need to know

One year after the launch of the Freebox Ultra, the Free operator is preparing for a new announcement: the Super Player. A new box under Android.

How to follow the announcement of the Freebox Ultra, and its symmetrical 8 Gbit/s, and the Freebox Delta, with its over-equipped Devialet TV box?

For an operator like Free who likes to focus on innovation, the equation must be very difficult to solve. However, we have known for several months that the operator is officially working on a new TV box to accompany its Freebox Ultra.

Thanks to a benchmark published on Geekbench, we now know a little more about the characteristics of the project.

It was Tiino-X83 who discovered this publication and who published a link to it on Twitter (X). The new box would be called “Freebox Player Super”. We would therefore have the Freebox Ultra accompanied by the Freebox Player Super.

This box would integrate a 5-core ARMv8 chip clocked at 2.02 GHz supported by 4 GB of RAM and would run Android 14.

This 5-core configuration is strange to say the least. Most ARMv8 SoCs use a 4, 6, or 8-core big.LITTLE architecture.

The identifier noted by Geekbench points to a Rockchip RK3588 SoC or a Broadcom BCM2712 chip. In both cases, these are manufacturers who equip televisions and TV boxes.

Free chose Broadcom as a partner during the design of the Freebox Mini 4K, before switching to an Amlogic SoC with the Freebox Pop.

We expect a presentation of the new “Freebox Player Super” box sometime in 2025.
