Donald Trump confirmed on Sunday morning that he will sign an executive order on Monday, following his swearing in, to temporarily suspend the law banning TikTok in the United States.
The platform, which has been inaccessible since Saturday evening in the United States, could therefore be available again on Monday for its 170 million American users.
“I will sign a decree on Monday to extend the deadline before which the law prohibiting its use will take effect,” indicates the president-elect, in a publication on his social network Truth.
Mr. Trump also proposes a 50% American shareholding with the current owners for the platform’s activities in the United States.
“By doing this, we are saving TikTok, keeping it in good hands and giving it the opportunity to remain accessible,” he adds.
Washington had given the social network, which belongs to the Chinese multinational ByteDance, a deadline to find an American owner for its activities in the United States in order to put an end once and for all to concerns related to the cybersecurity of the platform and the potential access to its data by the Chinese government.
“The only request that is required from American elected officials is that there be an American owner who takes control of the organization and who, like that, ensures that the little door which allows the intelligence services Chinese access to this information is closed,” indicates the host of the digital news podcast Mon Carnet, Bruno Guglielminetti, in an interview on the show “Le Québec matin”.
“There are around ten potential buyers who have already presented themselves recently, but also in 2022,” he adds. At the end of his first term, it was Donald Trump who launched the first salvo by saying that TikTok needed to be closed.”
-The president-elect therefore clarified that for him, 50% American shareholding would be sufficient to allow the platform to remain available.
However, it is not clear whether its owner will agree to do this, because this buyout would allow the new owners to have access to what makes TikTok successful: its algorithm.
“It is to know if ByteDance is ready for billions of dollars to reveal its technology which is behind this tool,” mentions Mr. Guglielminetti.
Already banned in certain countries such as India, TikTok is facing increasing pressure around the world in relation to the security of its data.
“Here in Canada, employees of the federal government and the Quebec government are no longer allowed to use TikTok on their device,” explains the podcast host. In the meantime, there was also the request by the minister [François-Philippe] Champagne in Ottawa from the closure of the TikTok offices, but the network is still available here.
The closure of TikTok’s offices in Canada is also contested by the company, which submitted a request for judicial review in December, describing the request as “unreasonable” and arguing that it violates its procedural fairness rights.
