The Minister of the Status of Women in Washington for Trump’s inauguration: Martine Biron must boycott the event, says QS

Québec solidaire asks the Minister of the Status of Women, Martine Biron, to boycott the ceremony surrounding the inauguration of Donald Trump on behalf of victims of sexual assault.

The Legault government will send Martine Biron to Washington on Monday, when the swearing-in ceremony of the 47th President of the United States will take place.

The Quebec Minister of International Relations, who is also responsible for the Status of Women, must participate in the reception offered by the Canadian ambassador to the United States on the occasion of inauguration day and must take part in a reception organized jointly by the Quebec Delegation in Washington and the Business Council of Canada.

“Donald Trump, the sexual attacker”

For solidarity co-spokesperson Ruba Ghazal, this is a bad signal for women.

“The Minister of the Status of Women, Martine Biron, should boycott the inauguration ceremony of Donald Trump, a recognized sexual assaulter. It would send a strong message to victims of sexual assault and to all women in Quebec: we do not pay tribute to a sexual attacker, no matter who he is,” she argued Friday, in a publication in the networks social.

QS nevertheless believes that Quebec must still be represented in Washington on the sidelines of the event in the context where Quebec’s interests are at risk due to tariff threats from the future occupant of the White House towards Canadian products.

Biron will not change his plans

In the minister’s office, it is clarified that the targeted events are not organized by the Trump administration. Martine Biron has no intention of changing her plans.

“Quebec must be on the ground during inauguration day in order to do the necessary representation work and assert its interests. Imposing tariffs would have significant consequences and we do not have the luxury of boycotting this important opportunity to meet with strategic partners. The minister will participate in events on the sidelines of the ceremony in order to meet her partners,” it was specified.
