Kayar fishermen welcome the measures recently adopted by the State of Senegal in favor of the artisanal fishing sector, which they welcome as a major step forward.
Among these measures, they highlight the non-renewal of fishing licenses granted to the European Union. “This helped preserve our resources. Today we catch rare species, the quantity of fish has increased, and we can now fish all year round without interruption. The situation has clearly improved compared to recent times when foreign ships harvested the best species,” they testify.
These efforts also include subsidies facilitating the acquisition of modern equipment, stricter regulation of fishing practices, as well as reinforced actions against illegal fishing. All of these initiatives are seen as essential to preserving fisheries resources and improving the living conditions of fishing communities.
-“These decisions reflect a real consideration of our concerns and constitute a decisive step towards sustainable fishing,” underlines a spokesperson for the Kayar fishermen.
However, they call for maintaining constant vigilance in the application of these measures and for deepening dialogue between the authorities and players in the sector to guarantee lasting results.
