The Siniya28 Gallery based in Marrakech welcomes the artist Rita Alaoui for her exhibition “The Water Under My Skin” from January 25 to March 15, 2025. The exhibition will accompany the African Art Fair, 1-54 Marrakech Art Fair, which will take place from January 30 to February 2, 2025.
Through two series of works in “The Water Under My Skin,” Rita Alaoui explores the healing of a world in rebirth, brought to life by an act of human resilience. This work highlights the crucial importance of the interconnection between humans and living things. In the first series, Rita Alaoui composes paintings that evoke imagined landscapes that lie between aquatic and terrestrial worlds. Organic and plant forms sometimes intertwine with human marks: erased tennis courts, abandoned surveillance chairs, bicycles or any other object attracting the artist’s eye testifying to human presence and creation.
The second series consists of large-format paintings on paper, primed with a natural henna pigment then coated, celebrating both the power and fragility of life through representations of flowers in full bloom. As Rita Alaoui points out, “one of the major concerns of our century is to change perspectives and abandon the anthropocentric perspective which put man, his condition and his destiny in the foreground, in favor of a refocusing on the nature. This approach resonates deeply with my work, where I highlight abundant nature and explore the links between visible and invisible worlds. My approach also reflects a deep desire to see the human and non-human worlds intertwine, to become one.
