ITA Airways, the Italian airline, has resumed direct flights to Tripoli, Libya, becoming the first major Western European airline to do so after a ten-year hiatus linked to the civil war. It will offer two flights per week between Rome and Tripoli.
“We are proud to inaugurate today our first direct commercial flight between Tripoli and Rome Fiumicino, thus strengthening commercial and cultural ties between Libya and Italy and supporting bilateral relations between the two countries“, indicated Andrea Benassi, CEO of ITA.
Libyan Transport Minister Mohamed al-Shahoubi said the resumption of flights was a sign of security for Libyan airspace and expressed a desire to expand connections to other European destinations.
Furthermore, Libya also expects the return of several other airlines by 2025. This connection is considered strategic for the Rome hub, facilitating connectivity with Africa.
