The death toll from the fires that have ravaged the suburbs of Los Angeles since Tuesday has risen to 24, authorities said on Sunday. Eight victims died from the Pacific Palisades Fire and sixteen died from the Eaton Fire.
Besieged by flames for five days, the situation remains critical in the second most populous city in the United States, Deanne Criswell of the federal natural disaster response agency (FEMA) warned on ABC on Sunday. She called on the population to remain extremely vigilant.
After a short lull, hot and dry winds are expected to regain strength until Wednesday, complicating the work of firefighters, authorities have warned.
More than 12,000 structures, homes or various buildings were destroyed or damaged by the fires, according to initial estimates from the authorities.
