Around fifty residents were evacuated Sunday morning after a fire in a basement in downtown Sierre (VS). Around fifteen people were taken to hospital for checks. No serious injuries were reported.
A release of smoke was reported on Sunday around 7:00 a.m. in the basement of a building in downtown Sierre, the Valais cantonal police said in a press release.
As a safety measure, nearly 50 residents of two adjacent buildings were evacuated. Around ten people, slightly inconvenienced by the smoke, as well as seven firefighters, were taken to hospital for preventive checks.
Rue de Sion was temporarily closed to traffic due to emergency services. The Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the fire.
