The American Lauren Macuga created a surprise on Sunday by winning the St. Anton super-G ahead of the Austrian Stephanie Venier and the Italian Federica Brignone. Best Swiss, Lara Gut-Behrami finished in 5th place, just behind Lindsey Vonn.

A first podium for Lauren Macuga would not have been completely unexpected given the 22-year-old American’s progress this season. But from there to imagining him crushing a race like during this Austrian super-G, there was a step that many would have been reluctant to take.

The skier from Park City (Utah), who achieved the best result of her career during the descent of Beaver Creek on December 14 (4th), had a perfect race in Tyrol. She set the best time in almost all sectors, also benefiting from slightly better visibility than the first competitors to start.

She relegated Stephanie Venier to 68 hundredths and Federica Brignone, victorious in her first descent the day before, to 92 hundredths. All the other skiers finished beyond second.

Good-Behrami leader

Fifth at 1”26, Lara Gut-Behrami saw a Lindsey Vonn who continues to gain momentum steal 4th place from her by two hundredths. But the Ticino, second of the first two super-Gs of the winter, nevertheless seizes the red bib of the specialty, taking advantage of the poor performance of the Austrian Cornelia Hütter (23rd, +2”22) and of the elimination of the Italian Sofia Goggia.

With two other skiers in the top 10, the Swiss achieved an overall performance. Corinne Suter signed her best result of the winter by taking 8th place (+1”76). And the day after her formidable 2nd place in the downhill, the Valaisanne Malorie Blanc ranked 9th, 1”80 behind Macuga, despite her bib 33.
