It is an association riding on its success against the extension of the motorways, last November 24, which presented its annual priorities in a bicycle room, this Thursday in Bern. Although it will not be possible to switch from the motorway to the bicycle for each trip, the Transport and Environment Association (ATE) nevertheless wishes to accelerate several reforms and slow down others. Starting with “the speed limit of 30 km/h, which is the solution to many challenges, a sort of magic formula,” assures Jelena Filipovic, co-president of the ATE. Currently, however, this effective and relatively inexpensive measure is under threat from all sides.” For the young woman, it is therefore necessary to “vehemently” commit to 30 km/h.

The major subject of the association’s 2025 strategy was not chosen at random: the divisive idea of reducing speed in urban areas from 50 to 30 km/h faces many headwinds. “A motion from PLR national councilor Peter Schilliger wants to make the introduction of 30 km/h more difficult,” explains Jelena Filipovic. The argument put forward is respect for a certain “road hierarchy”. This hierarchy is already a reality, so there is no need to legislate. National legislation would make it difficult, if not impossible, to introduce 30 km/h on certain roads. Even if a law to this effect has not yet been decided, its effects are already perceptible.”
