US President Joe Biden has canceled the trip which was to take him to Italy on Thursday due to the fires raging around Los Angeles, the White House announced on Wednesday. He went to the megacity on Wednesday to meet the emergency services.
Mr. Biden “made the decision to cancel his upcoming trip to Italy in order to focus on managing the overall federal response in the coming days,” said White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre in a press release.
The Democrat was scheduled to travel to Italy from January 9 to 12, for what was likely to be his last trip abroad before Republican Donald Trump returns to power on January 20.
The outgoing president, a practicing Catholic, was to meet Friday with Pope Francis, then with his Italian counterpart Sergio Mattarella as well as with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
At least five people have died in the ferocious fires raging around Los Angeles and ravaging the Hollywood Hills.
