Death toll rises to 113 in Burma and 430 in Southeast Asia – Libération

According to the latest figures from the authorities, the tropical storm that has been raging in the region since last weekend has caused at least 113 deaths and 320,000 displaced people in Burma. Four times more if we include the victims in Laos, Thailand and Vietnam.

Typhoon Yagi has wreaked havoc in Myanmar, leaving 113 dead and more than 320,000 displaced from flooding caused by the storm, the junta said Sunday. “Across the country, 113 people have died, 64 are missing and 14 are injured,” said military spokesman Zaw Min Tun, adding that “More than 320,000 people, or 78,000 households, have been evacuated to temporary relief camps.” According to state media, the human toll reached 113 dead this Sunday, September 15.

According to official figures, floods and landslides have killed nearly 430 people in Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand following Typhoon Yagi, which hit the region last weekend. Search and rescue operations are continuing in Myanmar, according to the state newspaper. Global New Light of Myanmar, who added that the floods destroyed more than 65,000 homes and five dams.

Swathes of farmland have been flooded in the centre of the country, particularly around the capital, Naypyidaw, and landslides have been reported in mountainous areas. With roads and bridges damaged and phone and internet lines down, it is difficult to gather information on the situation.

Junta leader Min Aung Hlaing on Saturday called for international help to deal with the floods, a rare move as the government has previously blocked humanitarian aid from abroad. The floods have worsened the situation in the country, which has been gripped by civil war since the junta seized power in 2021. The violence has forced more than 2.7 million people from their homes.
