Trump rewrites the history of January 6, 2021

On January 6, 2021, I absently watched the coverage reserved for the certification of the results of the 2020 election. Then, like many of you probably, I remained stunned by the sad spectacle offered by the supporters of Donald Trump.

You know what happened next, deaths, numerous injuries, ransacking and the presence of far-right groups.

More than a thousand charges for criminal acts followed, with convictions, the most severe for seditious conspiracy. Donald Trump would subsequently be accused and a majority of observers, including myself, believed that he would have difficulty recovering from the episode.

Democracy, you say? Ugh!

The Mar-a-Lago godfather’s political career should have ended on this note and he was expected to pay the price for his actions.

It was in another universe; a world in which democracy was not undermined, voters’ patience could still be exploited, and billionaires were not so open about their desire to control political power.

This was before social media echo chambers were the primary source of information and Democrats lost the ability to speak to a broader range of Americans.

I know of few more disturbing events in American history. The citizens of the “beacon of democracy in the world” did not see fit to sanction actions against which the judges of the multiple courts involved had very harsh words.

I am still stunned by the fact that anyone would think that the richest cabinet in history is first and foremost sincerely determined to correct the many problems plaguing the middle class and the poor.

Elon Musk, the richest man in the world, no longer even hides it, he associates with the far right and has been camping at Mar-a-Lago since Trump’s victory.

The new “patriots”

Among Donald Trump’s many promises is that of granting a presidential pardon to the attackers of January 6, 2021 on his first day in office.

The mere mention of these graces should arouse everyone’s indignation. Equally shocking is the vocabulary used to describe these criminals. They are now political prisoners and/or patriots! Nothing less!

Today’s day will unfold very differently from January 6, 2021. It will stand out for its normality, its banality. As it should be.

Despite a bitter defeat and numerous strategic errors, the Democrats will bow to the results. Kamala Harris, defeated candidate, will chair the certification. Already, even if we guess he was undermined by a sluggish end to his career, Joe Biden was elegant in defeat.

The democratic game is based on the acceptance of defeat, on everyone’s confidence in the integrity of the process. This confidence could take a long time to regain and do not count on the new administration to rebuild it.
