During the fifth session of the Central Committee of his party, this Sunday, December 22, 2024, Nabil Benabdallah, secretary general of the Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS), delivered an incisive speech denouncing an Algeria locked in a hostile posture towards everything which touches Morocco.
This relentlessness, according to him, reflects a costly and sterile diversionary strategy, to the detriment of the aspirations of the people of the region for cooperation and progress. In his speech, Benabdallah stressed that “theAlgerian leaders persist in clinging to chimeras, refusing to recognize the positive transformations and diplomatic advances of Morocco on the international scene “. While Rabat has achieved notable successes thanks to proactive diplomacy led by King Mohammed VI, Algiers is mired in outdated conspiracies, inherited from a bygone era when ideological rivalries dominated the region.
Visceral and anachronistic opposition
The Secretary General of the PPS also highlighted the efforts of Moroccan diplomacy to irrevocably close the Moroccan Sahara issue. Between international recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over its southern provinces and growing support for the autonomy plan proposed by Rabat, Algeria remains isolated in its blind support for a fictitious entity, the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR).
According to Benabdallah, this anti-Moroccan obsession reflects the inability of Algerian leaders to focus on their own internal challenges. He castigated “Algeria’s senseless spending on hostile campaigns against Morocco,” while the Algerian people face pressing social, economic and political problems.

« Instead of responding to the legitimate aspirations of citizens, the regime insists on projecting an image of an external enemy, hoping to divert attention from serious shortcomings in governance. “, he said. Benabdallah also denounced “ the constant efforts to sow hatred of Morocco and its institutions in the minds of the Algerian people », a strategy that he describes as irresponsible and counterproductive.
While the Algerian regime sinks into a posture of isolation, Morocco continues to capitalize on solid partnerships and a constructive approach. The support of the great powers, notably the United States, Spain and France, for the Moroccan solution to the Sahara conflict illustrates a decisive shift in balance.
Algeria facing triumphant Moroccan diplomacy
Benabdallah also welcomed the African momentum of the Kingdom of Morocco, which has become a key player on the continent thanks to a clear and ambitious strategy. “ Algeria should learn from this success instead of persisting in a hostile attitude that leads nowhere “, he insisted.
And, to add: “ Despite legal legitimacy and historical realities, as well as our country's outstretched hand policy towards our brotherly neighbor, Algeria, its leaders persist in getting lost in a universe of illusions. They oppose the desire of the people of the Maghreb to build a common future together, persist in their hostility towards everything Moroccan, and multiply provocations, plots and maneuvers aimed at harming our country and its interests. Worse still, they are working to distil a poison of hatred against Morocco, its institutions and its people. ».
The Algerian attitude towards Morocco is not just a simple disagreement between neighbors; it testifies to a profound rejection of everything that symbolizes openness and progress. This posture, fueled by intensive state propaganda, reflects a fear of losing control of a historical and ideological narrative built around antagonism towards Morocco.
In reality, this systematic relentlessness is more of a political survival strategy for a regime losing internal legitimacy. Rather than investing in structural reforms to improve the living conditions of its citizens, Algiers prefers to invest in disinformation campaigns and costly diplomatic actions to thwart Moroccan progress.
But, as international recognition of the Moroccan Sahara strengthens, the Algerian regime risks finding itself alone, prisoner of its illusions. This inability to adapt to contemporary geopolitical realities could well worsen its isolation, not only on the regional scene, but also among its own people.
