Russia has developed an anti-cancer vaccine, announced the leading Russian oncologist Andrey Kaprin. The vaccine will be marketed at the beginning of 2025 and will be completely free. According to Russian scientists, the vaccine would stop the growth of tumors and prevent metastases. Several leading Western scientists have nevertheless expressed skepticism.
Andrey Kaprin is the director of the Radiology Research Center of the Russian Ministry of Health. The oncologist announced the news earlier this week on “Radio Rossiya”, the main Russian public radio station.
A messenger RNA vaccine
The Russian vaccine – like those against the coronavirus – would have been developed based on mRNA technology. This type of vaccine makes it easier for the immune system to destroy bad cells, such as cancer cells. According to the Russian news agency TASS, the vaccine is the result of collaboration between several research centers. The drug will be available from the beginning of 2025 and will be completely free, reports the TASS agency.
According to Alexander Gintsburg, director of the Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology in Moscow, clinical studies have shown that the vaccine can stop the growth of tumors and prevent metastases. The microbiologist therefore suggests using artificial intelligence to accelerate vaccine production.
Earlier this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that his country was on the verge of developing “next generation cancer vaccines.”
Western skepticism
Several Western scientists have questioned the claims coming from Moscow. “Until we see the results of the clinical trials, we should remain skeptical,” Professor Kingston Mills, an immunologist at Trinity College in Ireland, told the American magazine Newsweek.
“We all know that there are multiple forms of cancer. It is therefore impossible for it to be a universal vaccine,” believes Professor Mills. “What type of cancer is it? Where is the clinical trial data? These are questions that must be answered to evaluate these allegations,” he concluded.
