This time, barring a last minute reversal, the United States should not escape one of their famous shutdownor a closure of the federal administration for lack of funding. It is an illustration of the glaring dysfunctions of the leading world power but also the result of the weight of Elon Musk, who put his fortune and his influence at the service of future president Donald Trump. The richest man in the world spent Wednesday campaigning against a budgetary compromise in Congress allowing the government to be financed until March 14, after Donald Trump returns to the White House.

We must now put this in the conditional. And it was Elon Musk who lit the fuse of this political conflagration. The boss of Tesla and SpaceX published a burst of tweets to torpedo the text negotiated for months between elected Republicans and Democrats. “Any member of the House of Representatives or the Senate who votes for this bill deserves not to be re-elected in two years,” thundered Elon Musk, in reference to the mid-term elections, when a large part of Congress will be renewed. Threats taken very seriously coming from a man with unlimited means and the capacity to finance alternative candidates during fratricidal primaries to punish recalcitrant outgoing elected officials.
