Several children died Wednesday during a stampede at a funfair organized on the premises of a school in southwest Nigeria, authorities announced.
“Unfortunately, a stampede led to many loss of life and many injuries,” said Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo State in a statement published on the social network Islamic community of Basorun in the town of Ibadan in Oyo State and the third largest city in Niger. Emergency services were dispatched to the site and as well as the police who arrested the organizers of the event, indicated Seyi Makinde. No official report has yet been communicated by the authorities.
“The event was interrupted and participants were escorted from the venue. We are taking all possible measures to ensure the safety of the place,” explained the Oyo State governor. “Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones affected by this tragedy. May the souls of the deceased rest in peace,” he added.
An investigation was opened to determine the exact circumstances of the stampede.
