The film “Reinas” was not selected for the Oscar for best foreign film – rts.ch

In “Reinas” by Klaudia Reynicke, a mother wants to leave Lima for the United States with her two daughters, leaving behind their father, who has little to offer them. This decision was motivated by the economic crisis, political unrest and lack of prospects in Peru in the 1990s.

Already sold in fifteen territories, the film was released in American cinemas at the end of November, we read in a press release from Swiss Films. Selected at the Sundance Film Festival, it won a Generation Kplus prize at the Berlinale and the audience prize at the Piazza Grande in Locarno.

Chosen to represent Switzerland in the “best international film” category, the film was not selected in the selection of fifteen candidate films unveiled Tuesday by the Academy of Oscars.

“Emilia Perez”, a musical drama by French director Jacques Audiard about Mexican cartels, already winner of several awards, remains in the running in this category, as well as in several technical categories.

No Swiss selected

Zurich producer Karl Spoerri, who co-produced the fiction feature film “Thelma”, is also not among the Oscar nominees.

The same goes for the Baldenweg siblings – Diego, Lionel and Nora – who composed the music for the Irish film “In the Land of Saints and Sinners” with Liam Neeson in the lead role. And for Tim Fehlbaum, who nominated in several categories with his film “September 5”.

The next stage of the Oscars will take place on January 17, when the nominated titles are published. As for the ceremony for awarding the prestigious statuettes, it must take place on March 2, 2025 in Los Angeles.
