The pretox aims to cleanse the body in order to get through the Christmas (and New Year) holiday period and its many rich meals without any problems. Often with the implicit idea of avoiding gaining weight.
Dietitian and nutritionist, Nicolas Aubineau refutes this principle of “preparing your body before big meals, as if it were a sporting competition”. And for good reason, in his eyes, this underlies “the idea of a restriction which would be totally counterproductive”.
No restrictions!
Eat less to relax better? He insists: “no and no again. This sends the wrong signals to our body which, feeling frustrated, would therefore be more likely to consider stocks with a view to future restriction…
In his eyes, “it is especially important to take advantage of this pre-holiday period to strictly apply the main advice on diet and prevention”.
In other words, place behind the word “pretox” not the occasion for strong restrictions, or even fasting. But the basics of a healthy and balanced diet.
Fiber, water…
In practice, take advantage of the coming period to:
- eat more vegetables and fresh fruits to, as Nicolas Aubineau puts it, “fill up on fiber, which will nourish the intestinal flora which risks being abused at the end of the month”;
- avoid consuming processed products;
- limit animal fats and fast sugars;
- forget about snacking;
- drink more water;
- eat three meals a day.
Keeping Balance
He adds: “in the morning, you can swallow squeezed lemon juice to facilitate emptying of the gallbladder and eliminate toxins from the liver.”
But once again: respecting these major principles does not constitute a prerequisite for giving up completely during the holidays. And to conclude: “when it comes to food, our body especially appreciates balance and moderation”.
