Liberal MP Dominic LeBlanc becomes Minister of Finance following the unexpected resignation Monday morning of Chrystia Freeland from the Prime Minister’s Office.

Member of Parliament for Beauséjour in New Brunswick since 2000, he has held the position of Minister of Public Safety, Democratic Institutions and Intergovernmental Affairs since July 2023.
He will retain these responsibilities.
He was sworn in to his new position late in the afternoon, at the same time as the government’s fall economic update was made public, which presents a deficit of $61.9 billion.
Her arrival comes in a context of uncertainty within the Liberal Party after the resounding departure of her predecessor in the morning, just a few hours before the economic update.
