The Ministry of Industry, Commerce and SMEs PMI has issued a note to shed light on rumors reporting a ban on the importation of second-hand clothing (‘feug diay’) in Senegal. According to the document, “the measure is in no way intended to penalize or put economic players and consumers in difficulty. It is rather part of a project to protect the local textile sector.”

Contrary to what has been widely relayed on social networks, this ban is not immediate.
“This is by no means an immediate measure or a brutal ban, as has been interpreted.” But of a possibility which is offered to the State of Senegal in the years to come in its industrialization process to protect the textile materials created in Senegal.

That is to say, protecting “Made in Senegal” and consuming it locally by “encouraging national production and job creation in this key sector of our economy”. The ministry says it is “fully aware of the importance of second-hand clothing for many Senegalese families and remains attentive to the stakeholders concerned” and is committed to putting in place consultation mechanisms to guarantee a harmonious and beneficial transition. for all citizens.
