Justice. The Casablanca criminal court postponed, during a hearing on Monday, the examination of the case of human rights activist Fouad Abdelmoumni until December 30, at the request of his defense.
While Abdelmoumni was absent from this session, his defense presented medical certificates attesting that he was ill, reported the Arabic-language site Al-Yaoum24.
Abdelmoumni is being prosecuted while at liberty for “insulting a public body” and “reporting a crime which he knows did not take place”, according to the charges, according to the same source.
Last November, the Casablanca prosecutor’s office referred Abdelmoumni to court following publications described as “insulting towards the kingdom and some of its authorities”.
During a press briefing, the deputy of the king’s prosecutor at the court of first instance of Casablanca affirmed that Abdelmoumani was subjected to interrogation “in accordance with legal procedures concerning allegations that he published and which affect the interests of the Kingdom and certain of its organs.” Furthermore, he considered that his allegations “exceed the limits of freedom of expression and contain elements constituting an offense punishable by law.”
For its part, the Moroccan Coalition to Support Political Prisoners considered that Abdelmoumni had been the subject of an “arbitrary arrest” as part of a series of “harassments” carried out against him.
As a reminder, a former political detainee under the reign of Hassan II, Abdelmoumni holds the position of coordinator of this Human Rights Coalition. He is also active in the fight against corruption and is a member of the “Federation of the Democratic Left”.
