ECOWAS Summit: a six-month “cooling off” period granted to AES countries to reverse their withdrawal

ECOWAS has decided to set up a “transition period” which will last until “July 29, 2025”, in order to “keep the doors of ECOWAS open to the three countries during this period”, specified Omar Touray, president of the ECOWAS Commission.

According to the regulation, “the three countries will officially cease to be members of ECOWAS from January 29, 2025,” said Mr. Touray.

On the agenda of the summit was the presentation of the report of the ECOWAS mediator in discussions with the three countries of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, as well as other security issues .

On Friday, the authorities of the three countries of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) announced that their decision to leave ECOWAS was “irreversible”, before declaring their countries “a visa-free space for any national” of ECOWAS .

The three member countries of the AES have also taken a series of measures to consolidate their Confederation, notably through the signing of a memorandum of understanding relating to the elimination of roaming charges for telephone communications (“roaming”) between their country.
