All four Montreal metro lines suffered an interruption of service at the same time, Saturday evening, due to a pepper spray attack.
The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) metro trains stopped shortly before 9:00 p.m., according to the X accounts of the four metro lines.
The entire blue and yellow lines have been frozen. On the orange line, the stations between Snowdon and Beaubien were affected. On the green line, it was between Guy-Concordia and Viau stations. Initially, the interruption also affected the stations up to Angrignon.
Service resumed around 9:30 p.m. for these last two metro lines, according to a publication on
Cayenne pepper on the subway
Around 8:20 p.m., the major intervention took place at the Place-des-Arts station, the Montreal City Police Service (SPVM) confirmed to TVA News.
Several calls were made to 911 to report that an irritant substance, possibly cayenne pepper, had been sprayed in the station, inconveniencing around twenty people.
Firefighters, police and paramedics rushed to the scene to treat the victims. Although some people experienced symptoms related to exposure to an irritant gas, no serious injuries were reported and no transport to a hospital was required.
No suspect has been arrested at the time of writing, confirmed the SPVM.
Young people, initially on board a metro, would have gotten off at Place-des-Arts before getting back into another car to try to escape. They were divided into two groups which confronted each other.
As a safety measure, the Place-des-Arts, Berri-UQAM and Peel stations were evacuated. The Place-des-Arts station is currently ventilated to dissipate gas residue. The police are continuing their investigation to identify the exact nature of the substance sprayed.
The air movement caused by the departure of the wagons would have facilitated the spread of the gas to other stations.
