Alert: why hundreds of thousands of French people will pay three times more for their electricity tomorrow

Watch out for “red days”: electricity will cost more from December 3, 2024

With the arrival of winter, EDF is launching the first “red day” of the Tempo offer this Tuesday, December 3, 2024. The subscribers concerned will see the price of the kWh increase up to 2.8 times the regulated rate between 6 a.m. and 6 a.m. the next day. Here’s everything you need to know to optimize your consumption and avoid a hefty bill.

What is EDF’s Tempo offer?

The pricing option Tempo from EDF is a modular formula intended for consumers wishing to adapt their electricity consumption according to the periods of the year and schedules. Here’s how it works:

  • Blue days (300 days/year) : the most advantageous rates.
  • White days (43 days/year) : intermediate rates.
  • Red days (22 days/year) : highest prices, mainly in winter.

Each day is also divided into:

  • Off-peak hours (10 p.m.-6 a.m.) : reduced prices.
  • Peak hours (6 a.m.-10 p.m.) : higher prices.

This system encourages responsible consumption, particularly during periods of high demand.

First red day of winter 2024/2025: why should you reduce your consumption?

This December 3, 2024, the kWh will cost up to €0.7562 during peak hours for Tempo subscribers, almost three times the regulated rate. Particular vigilance is therefore recommended, particularly for energy-intensive equipment such as:

  • Washing machines and dryers.
  • Electric heaters.
  • Household appliances used during peak hours.

Adopting good practices such as scheduling your machines during off-peak hours or reducing the use of non-essential devices can limit the impact on your bill.

Advantages and constraints of the Tempo offer

The Tempo offer can allow you to make significant savings over the year, but it requires active management of your consumption. Here are its main strengths and limitations:

Benefits :

  • Reduced prices on 343 days a year (blue and white days).
  • Encouragement of responsible consumption.

Constraints:

  • High prices during red days, requiring a drastic reduction in consumption.
  • Less suitable for homes heated exclusively with electricity without an alternative.
  • Daily management of consumption can be restrictive.

Should you subscribe to the Tempo offer?

The Tempo offer is ideal for households able to adjust their consumption according to days and times, such as those with programmable or alternative heating systems. On the other hand, it is not recommended for homes with constant or inflexible energy needs.

To maximize the benefits of this offer, consider:

  • Plan the use of your energy-intensive devices during off-peak hours.
  • Use energy-efficient equipment.
  • Change your habits on red days to avoid significant additional costs.

Save thanks to adapted consumption

With the first red day arriving, it is crucial to monitor your electricity consumption to avoid high bills. EDF’s Tempo offer can be an interesting solution for households ready to adjust their habits, while contributing to a more balanced use of the electricity network.
