The Sea Story was confronted with strong waves in the Red Sea at the time of the accident, according to the governor of the region Amr Hanafi, who relies on the statements of the crew and the surviving tourists.

A large wave reportedly hit the ship, causing it to capsize. The Sea Story, which has several decks, is said to have capsized within minutes. Some passengers did not have time to leave their cabins.
