UK courts to rule on ICC arrest warrant for Netanyahu

AA / Birmingham / Mehmet Solmaz

The question of the execution of the international arrest warrant targeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense minister will be determined by proceedings before the courts, a senior British government official said on Monday.

Former British Home Secretary Priti Patel questioned the government on its response to the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) issuance of arrest warrants for Netanyahu and the former defense minister. defense, Yoav Gallant, for war crimes committed in the Gaza Strip.

“The government will comply with its international obligations,” replied Under-Secretary of State Hamish Falconer, before adding: “There is a legal process before our independent courts to determine whether action should be taken to an arrest warrant from the ICC.

“This procedure has never been tested, as the United Kingdom has never received a visit from a person indicted by the ICC,” he said.

According to Falconer, Parliament has a common position regarding the rule of law at international level, which constitutes an “important commitment”.

And Hamish Falconer continued: “The International Criminal Court is an important body, the main one, for enforcing these standards and the questions of jurisdiction and complementarity were heard by the Trial Chamber. Three judges have made their findings and I think we should respect them. »

All actions of the current government will be “based” on international law, he added.

Last week, the ICC announced the issuance of arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant “for crimes against humanity and war crimes committed between at least October 8, 2023 and May 20, 2024.” at least” in the Gaza Strip.

Israel’s genocidal offensive in Gaza has continued since October 7, 2023, leaving more than 44,000 people dead, most of them women and children.

Israeli attacks have displaced almost the entire population of the enclave, while a deliberate blockade has led to severe shortages of food, drinking water and medicine, pushing the population to the brink of famine.
