Meal vouchers: MPs opt for the extension of their use in mass distribution: News

The exemption on the use of meal vouchers could be further extended. Deputies voted in favor of this measure even though it must still be examined in the Senate.

The majority of deputies voted on Wednesday, November 20, for the two-year extension of the use of meal vouchers for the purchase of foodstuffs such as rice, pasta, eggs or flour. The National Assembly thus returned to the version of the text amended in committee, which had extended the system indefinitely, after voting on an amendment from former minister Olivia Grégoire, reported The Parisian.

However, for many elected officials, this sustainability was not satisfactory. In fact, it did not respond to the fears of restaurateurs, who saw their market share on meal vouchers fall, to the benefit of mass distribution. Losses are estimated at 550 million euros since 2022. For the majority of deputies, sustainability was considered vital given the difficulties for the French in feeding themselves and coping with inflation.

An exemption implemented in 2022

The Secretary of State for Consumer Affairs, Laurence Garnier, has committed to launching, from January 2025, a profound reform of the meal voucher mechanism. But with the risk of government censorship in December, nothing is certain. The exemption for the use of meal vouchers was put in place in 2022, before already being extended by one year in 2023. It was therefore due to end in December 2024. The vote for the two-year extension of the exemption The use of meal vouchers will have to be examined in the Senate. The senators were more inclined towards a one-year extension.
