At the end of his contract a few months ago, Aliou Cissé was not extended by the new government, against the advice of the Senegalese Football Federation. The president of the entity which manages Senegalese football, Augustin Senghor, had the task of announcing to the coach that he had to leave his post.
In an interview with the BBC, the head of the federation recalls that Cissé was surprised, but above all philosophical. “He left following a government decision. We respect it because we respect authority. He was surprised, but the message he gave was that he didn’t want to create a crisis. He is very attached to his country. He said: “President, I will support Senegalese football, because I am a son of this country,” said Augustin Senghor.
The manager did not forget to mention all the achievements of the former coach, the first in history to win an African Cup of Nations (CAN) for Senegal. “Before his arrival, we had never won a continental trophy. It was huge for us. This is why I think it was good to let him finish his work, because Senegal is in a transition phase,” he continued.
