The cantonal police will not have new surveillance cameras. The Council of State wanted to do this in a bill submitted to the Grand Council. They would be used, among other things, to automatically read license plates and store the data, explains the RTS in an article published this Monday.
Lucerne had already been using similar equipment since 2022. But a judgment from the Federal Court annulled the measures taken by the German-speaking canton. Consequently, the canton of Friborg will not be able to continue its reflections on the subject.
The device can be installed on main roads, explains the RTS, making it possible, for example, to check whether suspicious vehicles resulting from a criminal investigation have taken this road. According to the Federal Court, this surveillance measure for the purposes of criminal prosecution goes too far and the cantons do not have the right to legislate on the issue.
On the Friborg side, the State Councilor in charge of security Romain Collaud believes at the RTS microphone that it is necessary to implement automatic plate reading.
