The option chosen by Jean Le Cam to go down the Atlantic seems to be a winning one. After regaining the lead on Monday evening, the oldest entrant widened the gap on his pursuers.
The wind continues to play against Arles in the Vendée Globe. The 39 skippers in the race are still struggling to move forward as the peloton prepares to pass the Cape Verde Islands. This is particularly the case for all those who have chosen to go west, who have to deal with the absence of wind, even before approaching the black pole.
The few who took the eastern option are better off. And this is particularly the case for Jean Le Cam. The Finistère, who regained the lead on Monday evening, in fact widened the gap on the rest of the fleet during the night. From now on, the skipper of “Everything begins in Finistère-Armor Lux” is almost 48 miles ahead of his closest pursuer, the Briton Sam Goodchild.
Jean Le Cam, twice as fast as his pursuers
If in the wake of Vulneable, Sébastien Simon is in third place, the fleet is grouped since no less than ten skippers are within 40 miles but must prepare for the lack of wind like what experienced Sam Goodchild and Sébastien Simon, who sailed at an average of seven knots over the last 24 hours. This is almost half as much as Jean Le Cam, which was still averaging nearly 15 knots this morning.
It should also be noted that Louis Burton, victim of major damage on Bureau Vallée – two large cracks near the boat's cap -, managed to repair his boat and was able to leave after having considered giving up. The skipper managed to fill the cracks present inside and outside the monohull using glue and sanding.
