NHL: Alexander Ovechkin (Capitals) continues to approach Gretzky’s record

Alexander Ovechkin is on a mission and nothing is going to slow him down. The Capitals legend took first place among NHL scorers on Monday night, scoring his 14th and 15th goals of the season to bring his total to 868 during his career.

After scoring a hat trick the day before, Ovechkin added to his haul in the first round when he fired a powerful wrist shot from the top of the circles to beat Connor Ingram.

The Utah goalkeeper then gave in for the third time on only five shots. Dylan Strome and Nic Dowd also scored for the Capitals in the 1st period.

Ovechkin did it again in the 2nd period during a two-man power play. Dylan Strome clearly won a throw-in towards John Carlson and the defender handed it over without delay to his captain who let go of a ball, on reception, directly into the upper part.

Ovechkin is seeking the all-time NHL goals scored record held by Wayne Gretzky, who has 894 in his career.

Utah took the lead just over three minutes into the first when Jack McBain opened the scoring.

The match is still in progress. More details to come.
